When should you plant asparagus?

Asparagus should be planted in early spring after danger of frost has passed. It should be planted in a bed that was prepared the previous fall.
Asparagus is a perennial plant, which means it comes back year after year. It does not tolerate growing where other plants or weeds are present. The asparagus should not be harvested until the second or third season. The plants are ready to be harvested once the spears reach 8 inches tall.
After the harvest season, asparagus is left to grow. It grows 4 to 6 feet tall with fern-like fronds and produces red berries. Once the foliage has turned brown, it is cut close to the ground and discarded.
