Should you shave the hair of a corgi chow mix?

Although there is much debate about whether or not to shave any long-haired dog, most veterinarians agree that shaving a dog's coat is generally unnecessary in warm weather. The fur actually helps keep the dog cool.

Long-haired dogs shed their insulating undercoat in the spring as the weather begins to warm. The remaining long hair acts as an insulator against heat, allowing air to circulate over the skin to keep the animal cool. The dog's coat also protects it from dangerous sun exposure. The only time it may be necessary to shave a dog is if the coat is matted or if parasites or disease make it impossible for the fur to function properly.
