When should I trim a honeysuckle bush?

Honeysuckles are vigorous plants that should be pruned in early spring. The Japanese variety can be pruned after it shows signs of new growth, while the Dutch variety should be pruned while it’s still dormant.
The honeysuckle thrives in sunny locations and is known for its trumpet-shaped fragrant flowers that attract hummingbirds and butterflies.
Honeysuckles are either shrubs or vines and either variety can become overgrown. If grown as hedges, they can reach 15 feet tall. The vines, when supported by a trellis, can grow up to 20 feet tall.
When selecting a new honeysuckle plant, avoid the Tararian (Lonicera tararian) and Japanese (Lonicera japonica) honeysuckle varieties because they are invasive.
