When should you upgrade to iOS 7?

Apple released iOS 7 in September 2013; as of 2014, anyone with an iPhone 4, 5S or 5C, an Apple tablet (except the original iPad), or a fifth-generation iPod can upgrade to iOS 7 whenever it is convenient. The iPhone 3GS and earlier are not supported by iOS 7.

Macworld recommends that users back up data and apps to a computer or iCloud before upgrading to a newer operating system. The processing demands of a newer operating system may cause older devices to perform poorly. In 2014, Apple released iOS 8, which works with iPhone 4s through iPhone 6 Plus, the fifth-generation iPod and the same Apple tablets that support iOS 7.
