When should you water grass?

Water grass when at least 30 percent of it wilts. The frequency at which grass wilts varies according to its type, location and health as well as the season and weather.

When older leaves begin to fold over and curl, it is time to water. A wilted lawn does not spring back when people walk on it. The ideal color of healthy grass is green. When grass is stressed by drought, it is a greyish-blue color. Grass is dormant when it is brown but recovers when it is watered.

Do not irrigate if the lawn shows no signs of stress. Overwatering grass makes lawns vulnerable to pests, diseases and underdeveloped root systems.
