Do sturgeon live in Lake Erie?

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) receives 15 to 20 reports yearly of sturgeon sighted in Lake Erie. The ODNR believes that the sightings are of juvenile sturgeon that have swum from the Detroit River, the St. Clair River and Lake St. Clair.

Lake sturgeon are large fish and can weigh up to 200 pounds and reach more than 6 feet in length. The fish has bony plates rather than scales. Female lake sturgeon do not reproduce until about the age of 20 and only spawn once over a period of several years. The ODNR is currently considering options to reintroduce the lake sturgeon into Lake Erie, as of March 2014.
