Vegemite, made using Brewer's yeast, is a salty, savory and bitter spread popular throughout Australia. Made by the Kraft company, Vegemite is a product that has an acquired taste, and is most often spread on bread or crackers for breakfast or lunch.
Vegemite, with its distinctly bitter overtones, is also used to flavor soup stock or complete a peanut butter or cheese sandwich. The spread is particularly rich in B vitamins, with a single serving accounting for between 25 to 50 percent of the daily recommended intake of B1, B2, B3 and folate. It was invented in 1922 by a chemist, and as of 2014, 22 million jars are sold annually.
