What is the temperament of a border collie?

Border collies are intelligent, high-energy dogs that can be very demanding of their owners' attention. They need regular play or mentally stimulating activities and can become neurotic if this need is not met. They are usually affectionate toward their families but often reserved with strangers.

Border collies have a strong instinctive desire to herd and may try to herd other pets or small children. If a border collie's need for exercise is not met, it may become neurotic and engage in destructive behaviors such as chewing and digging. These dogs excel at sheepdog trials, agility and obedience competitions and canine sports such as flyball, all of which provide excellent outlets for border collies' need for mental and physical exercise.
