What tools do you need to remove lug nuts?

Most frequently, use a lug wrench or tire iron to remove lug nuts. Alternatively, use a spider wrench, which is a cross-shaped tool with varying sized sockets on each tip.

Loosen lug nuts in a counter-clock wise motion while the wheel is still on the ground. Then, apply the emergency brake, and the brace the wheel diagonal from the wheel having the lug nuts removed with a block of wood. Jack the car up using the jacking points indicated in the owner's manual. When the tire is completely off the ground, finish removing the lug nuts by hand or with the tire iron.
