What type of dog is an English Setter?

The English setter is considered a gun dog. It originated in Great Britain in the 1800s to retrieve birds. For a while, the English setter was known as the Laverack setter, after the breeder Sir Edward Laverack.

The English setter has dark eyes and a mottled coat. It has abundant feathering on its legs, tail, underside and chest. Because of this, the dog needs to be groomed regularly and carefully. Its feet are small, but its chest is deep, and it has an alert and friendly disposition.

Male English setters can stand between 24 and 27 inches high at the shoulder and weigh between 55 and 80 pounds. Females are a bit smaller.
