What type of volcano is Paricutin?

Paricutin is considered to be a scoria, or cinder, cone volcano. It stands at a height of 9,186 feet above sea level and has a lava field that covers an area of 10 square miles around it. As of 2014, it is the youngest Western Hemisphere-based volcano.

The location of the Paricutin volcano is in the state of Michoacán, Mexico. Its eruption and emergence on Feb. 20, 1943 resulted in the destruction of the city of Paricutin. The volcano remained active between 1943 and 1952. By the time the volcano became dormant, the area surrounding it was nearly empty of vegetation and spotted with multiple lava fields.
