Sakurajima is classified as a stratovolcano. Prior to its eruption in 1914, the volcano was on an island, but it became connected with the Osumi Peninsula along the southern tip of Kyushu due to lava flows. As of 2014, the volcano remains active and approach to it is prohibited.

As of 2014, the mountain has remained active since 1955 and erupts between 100 to 200 times each year. The first eruption of Sakurajima was recorded to have occurred in 708 A.D. Sakurajima is located in the state of Kyushu in Japan, and its elevation is approximately 3,665 feet above sea level.
