Vaccines for certain types of meningitis do exist, according to WebMD. Two meningitis vaccines are available in the United States: the meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine, or MPSV4, and the meningococcal conjugate vaccine, or MCV4.

These two meningitis vaccines prevent four of the types of meningitis that make up 70 percent of the cases in the United States, according to WebMD. The recommended dose of the MCVP4 vaccine is one injection at age 11 and one at age 16. Side effects of the vaccine include breathing difficulties, hives, paleness, weakness, irregular heartbeat and dizziness. People who are ill or have ever had Guillain-Barre syndrome should not get the meningitis vaccine.
