When applied topically to the skin, vitamin E helps to lock in moisture and protect the skin cells from free radical damage, according to Prevention Magazine. Vitamin E also helps to protect the skin from dryness, inflammation and swelling when applied prior to sun exposure.

Studies have shown that vitamin E provides more benefits when the oil is applied topically than when it is taken orally, explains Mario Badescu Skin Care. Vitamin E contains antioxidants that assist in repairing coarse, dehydrated and damaged skin. When applied directly to the skin, vitamin E is easily absorbed and maintained allowing for extended protection and hydration between each application.
