Where were the first modern Olympics held?

According to History,com, the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece, during the summer of 1896. The International Olympic Committee met for the first time in Paris in June 1894 and selected the city to host the event.
The inaugural Summer Olympic Games featured 241 male athletes competing in 43 different events. Fourteen countries were represented, with France, Germany, Great Britain and Greece fielding the largest number of participants. The United States, however, had the most first-place finishes at the event (11), with James Connelly becoming the first ever Olympic champion when he won the triple jump on the first day of the games.
