As of 2014, the most recent Olympic games were the winter contests held in Sochi, Russia, in February 2014. More than 2,800 athletes competed in the games, and 12 new events were introduced, including women's ski jumping and the ski half-pipe for men and women.
During the Sochi Olympics, six nations competed in the winter games for the first time. They were Malta, Paraguay, Timor Leste, Togo, Tonga and Zimbabwe. The summer and winter Olympic Games alternate every two years. Prior to the 2014 Sochi games, the 2012 summer Olympics were held in London. The 2016 summer Olympics are scheduled for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
