J.R. Martinez, an actor, won "DWTS" in season 13 in November 2011. Dancing with Karina Smirnoff, Martinez surpassed the season's other front-runner, former talk show host Ricki Lake, who finished third after dancing a tango. Martinez competed against Rob Kardashian and his dance partner in the two-night season finale.

During the finale, Martinez and Kardashian each danced a samba that garnered both of them 30-point perfect scores and gave Kardashian a one-point lead over Martinez. Martinez competed in the finale while still recovering from having twisted his ankle a week earlier. The show determined the winner by tallying votes from viewers and combining them with the dancers' total scores.
