The world seed bank is the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, located between Norway and the North Pole on an archipelago. The seed bank's purpose is to gather a permanent collection of seeds from all the world's crops in order to maintain future crop diversity.
The facility is managed by the Global Crop Diversity Trust, the Nordic Genetic Resource Center and the Government of Norway. Genebanks deposit seeds for storage in the vault, to which access is granted only to a limited number of people.
The seed bank can store up to 2.25 billion seeds, which equals about 500 seeds from around 4.5 million crop varieties.
