Standard form in elementary-level mathematics is the number written in standard numerical form, such as 5,395. According to StudyZone.org from the Oswego City School District, elementary mathematics usually lists around three ways to write numbers: standard, expanded and word name.
For example, the number 4,368 is already written in standard form. Written in expanded form is done by adding the value of the digits at each decimal place. 4000+300+60+8 is the same number in expanded form. Finally, there is word name, where the number is spelled out grammatically: four thousand, three hundred and sixty-eight. These three types of representations are commonly seen on fourth grade math tests.
