Who wrote "The Aeneid?"

"The Aeneid" was written by the Roman poet Vergil, sometimes spelled Virgil. Vergil was born in 70 B.C. He wrote "The Aeneid" during the last 10 years of his life, completing it shortly before his death in 19 B.C.

Vergil was considered by his contemporaries to be one of the major poets of the Roman Empire. In addition to "The Aeneid," he wrote dozens of other poems on a wide variety of topics, including political satire, romantic odes and instructions on running a farm. "The Aeneid" was one of his last works, and it was unedited at the time of his death. Although he wanted the poem burned if he didn't live to complete it, Vergil's editors intervened and published the poem posthumously.
