“One Pair Of hands†was written by Monica Dickens, the great-granddaughter of the author Charles Dickens. Written in 1939, the book is a mildly satirical autobiography of her time as a maid and cook during the 1930s.
This is the first book written by Monica Dickens who during her earlier life left her middle-class background in London to work as a cook and servant, which provided the stories “One Pair Of hands†are based upon. Ms. Dickens published several more books based on her life experiences, which included working as a nurse and in an aircraft factory, and later working as a journalist at a local newspaper.
