"Leviathan" is a young-adult novel written by Scott Westerfeld and illustrated by Keith Thompson. The steampunk novel, released in October 2009, is the first in a trilogy that includes "Behemoth" and "Goliath."
"Leviathan" is set in an alternative version of World War I in which the Central Powers fight with diesel-driven iron machines against the Entente Powers and their fabricated animals. The Leviathan is a whale airship and the most powerful weapon in the British fleet. The heroes of the novel are Prince Aleksandar, the son of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and Deryn, a Scottish girl who dreams of flying for the British Air Service. "Leviathan" won the Aurealis Award for best young adult novel in 2009.
