Where does the Amazon River start?

The Amazon River starts in the Nevado Mismi region of the Andes Mountains in Peru. It is the biggest river in the world terms of volume of water discharged. It is also the second longest river after the Nile in Africa, with a total length of 6,992 kilometers.

The Amazon River flows from west to east through Peru, Guyana, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Columbia and Brazil. Its mouth is in the Atlantic Ocean. The width of the Amazon ranges from 1.6 to 10 kilometers in some places. The Amazon River basin covers as much as 40 percent of the South American mainland. About 20 percent of the Earth’s fresh water entering the oceans comes from the Amazon River.
