Richard Schulze opened the first Best Buy store in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1966. The store was originally called Sound of Music, but the name of the company was changed to Best Buy in 1983.
When Richard Schulze and a partner opened Sound of Music in 1966, the company sold high-fidelity stereos and other musical equipment. Schulze bought out his partner's stake in the company in 1971 and spent the next 10 years expanding his company to include other electronics, such as appliances and VCRs. The new diversity in the electronics sold at the store prompted Schulze to change the company's name to Best Buy in 1983.
