"Cabin fever" refers to feelings of extreme irritability and restlessness that occur as a result of being confined indoors or living in isolation for an extended period of time, according to Merriam-Webster. Additional symptoms of cabin fever include depression, crankiness and sleep loss, notes WebMD.

Cabin fever often occurs when people must remain indoors due to inclement weather in winter months, and it's sometimes called the winter blues, explains WebMD. To avoid cabin fever, people should make an effort to maintain contact with friends and get out of the house as often as possible. Practicing relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, and engaging in regular exercise can help reduce feelings of depression and anxiety.
