Can an American driving license be used in South American countries?

U.S. driver's licenses are accepted in most South American countries in conjunction with either an International Driving Permit or an Inter-American Driving Permit, according to the U.S. State Department. IDPs can be purchased through the American Automobile Association or the National Driving Club.

The International Driving Permit serves as a translation of a valid driver's license into the local language and is recognized as either a primary or secondary license to drive. IDPs are widely accepted, but the local embassy should be consulted about driving laws, since country-specific requirements vary. An alternate form of the IDP, the Inter-American Driving Permit, is required in Uruguay and Brazil, explains AAA.

As of 2015, the cost of an IDP or IADP is $15, paid to either the American Automobile Association or the National Driving Club. Permits are valid for one year.
