How can you find out how many deaths there have been in the United States in the past week?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention compile annual statistics on deaths in the United States. Weekly tabulations are available for data collected though 1989.

After 1989, publicly available micro-data files indicate the year, month and day of week, but not the exact date of each death. Qualified researchers can apply to the NAPHSIS, a national non-profit organization for public health officials, or the National Center for Health Statistics for permission to access data which includes date of death. That data is available for compiling weekly mortality statistics. The policy of the United States differs from that of Great Britain, where weekly mortality surveillance is routine.
