The type and severity of an ankle injury plays a large part in determining when a patient can start to use his ankle again. Most people see improvement within 1 to 2 months, although it can take up to a year to fully heal, according to TriHealth.
There are a number of reasons for ankle surgery to be performed, including arthritis, Achilles tendon disorders, Morton's neuroma, tibialis posterior dysfunction and plantar fasciitis, according to Arthritis Research UK. There are varying recovery times for each of these. For example, after fusion surgery, it may take 12 to 14 weeks for full fusion to occur, but plantar fasciitis surgery is quick, requiring only a bandage after the operation.
