Port-au-Prince is the capital of Haiti. With its estimated 2012 population of 942,194, it is also Haiti's largest city. Port-au-Prince has been the capital of Haiti since the country's independence in 1804.
Prior to 1804, Port-au-Prince was the capital of the French colony of Saint-Domingue, a role it played since the French moved the capital from Cap-Français in 1770. The city is home to the capitol building, the Legislative Palace, the Judicial Palace and the Presidential Palace.
Port-au-Prince suffered severe damage in a 2010 earthquake, exacerbating the unemployment and poverty suffered by many of the city's residents. The death toll from this earthquake exceeded 200,000.
