In general, most Chevrolet dealerships maintain a list of VIN numbers for all vehicles that they have in stock, to be shared with police in the event of theft from the dealership. These lists are generally not available to the public upon request.

Dealerships keep VIN number lists relatively inaccessible in order to protect themselves from being targeted by car thieves, who might use these numbers to make duplicate keys for use in car robberies. Police also request VIN number lists from Chevrolet used car dealerships in the event of a car theft to ascertain whether the thief has sold the car.
