Madam C.J. Walker had one daughter, A’Leila. Walker gave birth on June 6, 1885, when she was 18 years old. Her husband Moses McWilliams fathered the child, although he died when A'Leila was only 2 years old.

After the death of her husband, Walker found work as a laundress to support her daughter, earning $1.50 a day, which she used to send her daughter to the city’s public school. She invented a line of African-American hair care products after suffering from a scalp ailment. Madam C.J. Walker possessed an adamant business acumen that led her to become one of the first self-made American women millionaires.
