Why did Pastor John Hagee get divorced?

Pastor John Hagee said in a 1975 letter to his former congregation that he was guilty of "immorality." He then divorced his first wife Martha Downing to whom he had been married for 15 years and married Diana Castro, a member of his congregation, the following year.

After their divorce, Martha received full custody of their two children, and Hagee subsequently had three children with his second wife, Diana. Hagee resigned from his position as pastor of Trinity Church due to the scandal of his divorce. In 1987, he founded Cornerstone Church, a nondenominational megachurch where he serves as the senior pastor as of 2015.
