The Dominican Republic is located on the island of Hispaniola. To the east of Hispaniola is the Atlantic Ocean, and to the west is the Caribbean Sea. The Dominican Republic is part of the Great Antilles archipelago.

The Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti. Hispaniola is the second-largest island in the Caribbean. With regard to both area and population, the Dominican Republic is the second largest nation in the Caribbean, behind only Cuba in both respects. It has an area of 18,704 square miles, and as of 2010, the population is 9,445,281. The capital of the Dominican Republic is Santo Domingo.
