The capital of the Dominican Republic is Santo Domingo. Santo Domingo has a population of nearly 1 million citizens as of 2014, comprising 10 percent of the total population of the Dominican Republic.

Santo Domingo became the first permanent European settlement in the Americas after Christopher Columbus landed there in 1492. This also made Santo Domingo Spain's first capital city in the New World. Santo Domingo's Colonial Zone also became home to the first cathedral, castle, monastery and fortress built in the Americas. As of 2014, these attractions also make Santo Domingo one of the biggest tourist attractions in the Caribbean.
