The official capital of the Dominican Republic is Santo Domingo, situated in the southern central coastline of the country. The city is located at the latitude of 18 degrees 28 minutes north and longitude of 69 degrees 54 minutes west.

Santo Domingo is the largest city in the Dominican Republic. In 2011, the city's population was estimated at around 2.191 million, as reported in the World Factbook of the Central Intelligence Agency. Established in 1496 by Spain, Santo Domingo is considered to be the oldest European colony of the New World. The first hospital, university, two-story house, church and fortress in the Western Hemisphere are also found in Santo Domingo.
