How do you grow squash?

Plant squash seeds 1 inch deep, about 18 to 20 inches apart after the danger of frost has passed. Keep the squash well fertilized and watered to help the plants grow.

Following the proper steps should lead to a healthy harvest of squash.

1. Plant in warm soil
Wait until the soil temperature reaches at least 60 degrees Fahrenheit. If the growing season is short, start early by planting seeds indoors 2 weeks before danger of frost has passed.
2. Plant 1 inch deep
Place each squash seed 1 inch deep into the soil and space about 18 to 20 inches apart. Gardeners may plant either the seeds or transplant seedlings into the soil this way. Vining squash varieties need more space than others.
3. Keep the plants well fed
Provide plenty of fertilizer for the squash plants as they grow. Squash are heavy feeders, so they need lots of nutrients. Gardeners can also incorporate manure or compost into the soil before planting to help give squash seeds a good start. 
4. Water squash plants often
Water the squash plants about once a week. Check to see if the soil is damp about 4 inches down. If damp, the squash doesn't need watering yet.
5. Cover base of plants with mulch
Keep weeds from growing around the squash with a light layer of mulch. Less mulch is required for squash, as the large leaves help keep sunlight from reaching weeds and other smaller plants.
