What is HandBrake?

HandBrake is an open-source multithreaded transcoding application for computers. The tool converts video and audio from a variety of formats to a format chosen by the user. The application is free to use.
HandBrake was developed by Eric Petit in 2003 as a way to make ripping a DVD to a data storage device easier. Though HandBrake was launched with a simple mission, the application continues to undergo changes, taking on new features, such as batch encoding, output customization and optimized device presets. The application is legal to use as of 2014, as it does not defeat or circumvent copy protection on commercially produced DVDs and Blu-ray discs.
