The Battle of Gonzales took place near the small town of Gonzales, Texas, on Oct. 2, 1835. The battle is considered to be the first battle of the Texas War of Independence, which ended with the region breaking away from Mexico.
The Battle of Gonzales was relatively small in scale and resulted in only one casualty on the Mexican side and none on the part of the Texan rebels. The battle began in the morning when the Texan rebels crossed the river to assault the Mexican army's encampment. The Mexican commander, Francisco de Castañeda, called for a hasty cease-fire before retreating to San Antonio shortly thereafter.
