How many Hindu gods are there?

According to a conversation between sage Yajnavalkya and his devotee Vidagdha Sakalya, mentioned in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, there are exactly 3,306 Hindu gods mentioned in Vedas. However, when the devotee kept his query about the number of Hindu gods, the sage admitted that there is only one supreme god, and other gods are just different forms.

According to the Vedas, there are eight forms of Vasu, 12 forms of Aditya and 11 manifestations of Rudra, and Prajapathi Brahma and Indra each take one form. Some of the gods mentioned in the Vedas are considered to be more important than others.
