Sacagawea golden-colored coins are copper and manganese brass coins created by the U.S. Mint that feature the historic Shoshone Indian guide Sacagawea. Although they debuted in 2000, they only remained in public circulation for six years.
The original run of Sacagawea dollar coins featured an eagle design on the reverse side. After 2008, the coin's design team replaced the eagle with various images that represented Native American culture.
The original purpose of the coin was to supplement the market's lack of small dollar coins. The most popular dollar coins at the time were the Eisenhower and Susan B. Anthony dollar coins, which were considered too large for regular use by the general public.
