The first baby born on New Year's Day gets a lot of media attention. The hospital or city where the baby is born may also give the parents a prize, ranging from a gift basket to a college scholarship.

New Year babies have always been a favorite subject of news agencies around the world. Some cities also hold contests that give a prize to the first baby of the New Year. This is the case in Chicago, where all city hospitals eagerly join in on the competition. According to one doctor, although the winning hospital doesn't get a prize from the city, the publicity alone is reward enough.
