The Jeep Cherokee was first manufactured in 1974 as a less expensive, two-door version of the Jeep Wagoneer. A four-door model went into production in 1977. Jeep began producing the modern version of the Cherokee starting in 1984, complete with a new design and different dimensions.
Between 2002 and 2013, the Jeep Cherokee was redesigned and released as the Jeep Liberty in North America. The Jeep Cherokee name returned in 2014, along with a more streamlined design. In total, the company has produced five different Jeep Cherokee lines as of 2015: SJ, XJ, KJ, KK and KL.
Jeep also produces the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which went into production in 1993.
