The U.S. legislative branch, also known as the legislature or Congress, meets in the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. The legislative branch comprises the Senate and the House of Representatives.
The legislative branch is the body of the government tasked with the creation and passing of laws. The U.S. Congress includes the Senate, consisting of two elected members per state, and the House of Representatives, consisting of 435 elected members, with each state designated a number of representatives based on population. In addition to passing laws, major duties of the House include originating spending bills, and major duties of the Senate include approving treaties and impeaching officials.
