There are 435 representatives in the U.S. House of Representatives. It also includes six nonvoting members: a resident commissioner from Puerto Rico and five delegates from the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands.
Congress established the number of representatives by law in 1911. The Constitution requires the government to allocate representatives based on population, with each state receiving at least one. It also mandates the reapportionment of representatives every 10 years. California has the most with 53 representatives as of 2015, while seven states have just one. Each House member represents approximately 700,000 constituents.
