How many voting members are in the House of Representatives?

The U.S. House of Representatives has 435 voting representatives, representing all 50 states. This number has remained the same since 1913 but was permanently fixed into law by the Permanent Apportionment Act of 1929.

The U.S. Constitution only requires that each state have at least one representative and no more than one per every 30,000 persons, but it does not provide a framework for the House of Representatives to reapportion itself or guidance as to how large it should be. As the population urbanized, a battle broke out between rural and urban states as to the appropriate way to reapportion the House, causing the House to fail to reapportion itself after the 1920 census. The Permanent Apportionment Act of 1929 established rules for automatically reapportioning the House and ended the debate.
