What does okra taste like?

Okra has a mild flavor that is similar to that of an eggplant, though the texture is different than that of eggplant. Okra can be served raw, pickled or fried. It is also marinated in salads or cooked on its own.

Okra is a vegetable that is grown year-round in the South in the U.S. When buying fresh okra, look for pods that are less than four inches long, free of bruises and tender but not soft. Fresh okra can be refrigerated for two to three days. Cooked okra can be refrigerated for three to four days. Okra stays good in the freezer for up to 12 months. It should be blanched whole for two minutes before freezing. Okra can also be canned.
