The liver is an organ of the digestive system. The role of the digestive system is to transform food into necessary energy and to rid the body of solid waste. The liver functions within this system by producing bile and by filtering the blood from the digestive system.
The bile made by the liver helps digest fat in the small intestine. The liver also stores energy from food in the form of a glucose called glycogen for the body to use later. This organ is also responsible for breaking down chemicals in the body and ridding the body of toxic substances.
