To remove spots from a carpet, spray a cloth with a detergent solution and use it to blot away the stain. Spray a second clean cloth with water, and use it to remove the cleaner.
To remove set-in stains from carpets, run through the following steps.
- Prepare the spray bottles
- Clean the spot with detergent
- Rinse away the detergent
- Dry with paper towels
Make a mixture of one cup of warm water and a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid and pour it into a spray bottle. Fill a second spray bottle with cold, clean water.
To wipe away the stain, moisten a cloth with the detergent solution. Carefully blot away the stain with a cloth, taking care not to rub the cloth into the spot. Keep blotting the carpet with new sections of cloth until the spot disappears.
To rinse away the detergent, moisten a cloth with the clean water spray bottle. Blot the cloth onto the carpet to let it absorb the leftover detergent.
Place a layer of paper towels over the carpet to absorb the remaining water and any leftover stains. Leave the paper towels on the spot overnight.
To clean away fresh, water-soluble stains such as wine, coffee or tea, wash the carpet with one tablespoon of ammonia and one cup of water. To clean away fresh oil-based stains such as salad dressing, makeup or butter, carefully wipe away the stain with a solvent. To clean fresh mud stains, vacuum up the dirt and then wash the area with a detergent solution as described above.
