What is a staghorn sumac tree?

A staghorn sumac is a deciduous tree native to the eastern United States. It commonly grows as shrubs in colonies, though it may grow as a single tree on occasion.

Staghorn sumac trees are hardy and can withstand polluted conditions, dry climates and open areas. They typically grow from 15 to 25 feet and have broad compound leaves on their stems. The leaves display rows of leaflets that grow from 2 to 5 inches on average.

Their green flowers grow in clusters on the ends of the stems. Staghorn sumac trees have cone-shaped clusters of tightly packed hard red berries that grow small hairs, which cover the berries in a type of fuzz.
