Where does the sun rise in the Northern Hemisphere?

The sun rises more or less in the east in the Northern Hemisphere. The sun rises from due east only on the fall and spring equinoxes, when the day is equally divided between day and night. On non-equinox mornings, the sun rises either north or south of due east.
At the summer solstice, which is the longest period of daylight, the sun rises in the northeast. After this, the sun creeps further southward until it rises in the southeast during the winter solstice, which is the longest period of darkness.
However, the idea that the sun rises or sets is an illusion. The Earth rotates around the sun in an eastward direction, which is why it appears that the sun is rising in the east.
